Advocacy Update 9/1/2026

Welcome to week two, we made it! 

First, the CSN Faculty Senate Canvas shell is now public https://csn.instructure.com/courses/1425527 

Second, there are advocacy opportunities this week.  The Board of Regents quarterly meeting is this week in Reno.  The Regents are our elected governing body who directly work with Nevada’s governor and legislature. 

The public can livestream the Regents’ meetings via this link: https://nshe.nevada.edu/live/  The meetings are also recorded and available to watch later. 

Governance for CSN, therefore, starts with the Regents Handbook, which we are obligated to adhere to, in addition to state and federal law. You can view the Handbook here: https://nshe.nevada.edu/regents/policies/

The Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, September 3rd and 4th, and is covered by Nevada’s Open Meeting Law. This means the meeting agenda and materials must be made public at least three days in advance.  NSHE staff usually send materials out about a week prior to the meeting. I always review the main board and committee agendas to prepare to ask questions or contact people involved with issues that are important to CSN. All the meeting agendas and supplemental materials are here: https://nshe.nevada.edu/regents/upcoming-meetings/ 

When you look through a Regents’ agenda, if the item includes a presentation and/or documentation, you will see blue highlighted links at the bottom of the agenda item.  Click on those links to see the explanation and/or presentation the Regents will discuss during their meeting. 

Nevada’s Open Meeting Law requires opportunities for public comments.  The Regents provide three ways you can contribute: in-person (on-site or remote), written, and via telephone. 

If you would like to provide public comments in-person, you can go to the meeting or to any NSHE office listed at the top of the meeting agenda.  If you go to a remote site, you will be video conferenced into the main meeting location.  The top of the meeting agenda also includes information for providing public comments via telephone.

Each meeting begins with public comments, so, if you would like to speak about a particular agenda item, be ready at the start of the meeting.  When you speak either at the podium or via the phone, first identify yourself and then state which agenda item you are speaking about.  You will only have two minutes, so be as focused and succinct as possible.
